I live in a very densely populated section of NJ, 25 mi from Midtown NYC, so
it's busy. I'm fortunate to drive to work every day through what we call a
"reservation", essentially an undeveloped county park. So I see deer, turkeys,
racoons, and lots of nice scenery every day. There is a little lake on the
property and it usually freezes in the winter. (This winter it REALLY froze
and was walkable for about 8 weeks!)

This shot was taken very early in the winter. The lake had partially frozen to
around 1" or less and it had snowed lightly that morning with the temperature
about 20-25 deg. F. The ice was fresh and the dry snow had dusted the ice.
The wind had whipped up as the temperture dropped on the passage of the cold
front and had blown the snow into very interesting patterns on the ice. The
sun had been up about 1/2 hr and hadn't reached the scene you see. It was
shining brightly on the top half of the trees and I had to make sure that it
didn't overwhelm the 120 Velvia that I was shooting. I was particularly
intrigued by the brown reflections in the water and the neat patterns on the
snow. I took 6 shots and screwed up 2 of them as this was the first roll of
film that I run through the Rolleiflex. So only 4 turned out and this was the
best.

I find that the picture has several items of interest: the backgroud ice with
the coldness of the ice, the forground diagonal composition of the snow-covered
hedgerow, and the nice, dark blue reflection of the sky with the skylit brown
trees sets it off.
