I would not call multi-spot metering "a necessity" at all. It can be useful in
difficult situations. I rarely use it.
Sometimes I use it to check shadows and highlights by first taking a spot in
Zone V (a gray card, if available), then taking one each in the darkest shadow
and brightest highlight, then noting how different the average is from the Zone
V spot.
Then after doing all that, I usually clear the memory and go with the Zone V
spot. :-)
IMHO, multi-spot metering is worth more in "wow" factor than in reality.
