It's excellent for
- fill-in flash (underexposing the flash),
- when you want a specific lighting ratio using two or more flashes, and
- when you're using non-TTL cords.
TTL is less finicky and error prone, allows a greater choice of f/stops, and
works better in macro shots (bounced) - and is what I usually use.
