Possibly because, as he says, he objects to sniping on moral grounds -- but
also, I've only ever bid more than I intended to when I was bidding the
'real' way. Sniping makes it easy for people to set a price they want to pay
and stop there, whereas if everyone knows they can't do that, then they'll
have to bid properly and then the possibility of a bidding war becomes a lot
higher.
