The hot-lamp version looks nicer, with less pronounced highlights, IMO.
Generally, I find that photos with larger light sources are nicer. In fact, I
find that I also like shots that are taken on a back-lit surface, like a light
table or translucent table. This helps reduce the number of reflections and
light the underside of the products, which helps with black items. Also,
sometimes it helps to force a digicam to overexpose the picture to bring out
the darker item.
Look here for a couple of shots that I took on a light table with overhead
tungsten lights. It's of a pen that I sold, sorry, no OM content.
