I need help. I've stumbled along, making all of the beginner's mistakes with
scanning and editing. What are your workflow
techniques? What gives superior results, saves time, and allows revisions?

************************
For example, when I started to learn to scan, I would begin editing
immediately. It's now clear that the smarter way to work is to
store all raw scans in one place then COPY the new image to an editing folder
and begin editing.

Since I have a modest computer, it takes a long time to edit on full-sized
images in Photoshop7. Does it make sense to work this
way?

1. make first pass, low res scan.
2. copy the raw scan into a "work" folder and open it.
3. Begin recording a macro, so all of my "moves" are recorded. The edits will
be very fast because the file size is tiny. Make all
level changes but no sharpening edits. Save the macro.
4. Make a high-res scan and store it in a dedicated folder. Copy it to a
"work" folder and open it in Photoshop.
5. Play back the macro on the high-res "work file" while I do something else.

Will a level-changing macro recorded "against" an 8-bit, small file work
perfectly if I run it on a 12-bit, high-res images?

My biggest problem right now is it takes so long to make selections and burn
down those areas, or blur them. I want to do this
experimentation on small "work prints", then play everything back on the big
file. Is that possible?

If I select an area in a low-res scan while recording a macro, it's not smart
enough to "scale" up my selection if I play back the
macro on a big file, right? I have to make all selections and define "Layers"
on the full-sized file, right? I can't play back
macros that make selections?

How smart are macros? Can I define suite of macros so that macro "A" plays
against "Layer Lama1", then macro "B" switches layers
and only affects "Layer Lama2"?

Example? Here's the Before/After:

As you can see I burned down all of the distracting chrome. I went too far
with it in some places but it took hours to get to this.
Since I opened it as a .TIF and never saved it as a .PSD, all of the
intermediate steps (in History) are gone. I don't have any
Layers to go back to. <sigh> I'm ready to work smarter. What say ye?
