Oops! Sorry. I understand the 7Hi has many improvements over the 7i
that I played with.

I agree. BE CERTAIN you play with an electronic viewfinder digicam
before purchasing it! This is the sort of thing that may break your
heart if you buy it mail-order, sight-unseen.
I'm sure it can be gotten used to, and I'm sure you can still take
great photos with it, but the viewfinder just totally turned me off.

The Dimage 7Hi may now be black, but it is essentially the same
unpleasant plastic toy as before. What is disappointing is that this
is the third generation of the camera and Minolta still has not managed
to deal with CCD noise with the same chip that is better managed by
Nikon or Sony. It is just a half hearted effort unfortunately.
I have used an electronic viewfinder under a wide variety of conditions
and while it is not pretty it works with an autofocus camera. When you
consider that it enables a precise view of what is being captured
compared to a regular viewfinder without the cost, weight and bulk of
an SLR mirror box it is a wonder. It really is an SLR. They do tend to
wash out in bright light, more a factor of the eye's accomodation I
think, but much, much brighter than an optical SLR in low light. You
lose a little and gain a little.
