8x10 isn't a very big enlargement for 35mm, only about 8x. It does,
however, magnify flaws that were not especially noticeable at 4x6 so
that they can be quite noticeable. Ones first reaction is to blame
equipment and that indeed may be at least part of the problem. Printing
may be part fo the problem as well. Cheap, mass-produced enlargements
are not always sharp, sometimes, but not always. The other thing,
though, is that failures of technique suddenly loom up. Unsharpness due
to less than perfect focus, inadequate DOF, vibration, etc. can make a
shot that looked good at 4x6 look so-so or worse at greater
enlargements. Many people make excellent 16x20 prints from 35mm, but it
takes excellent technique.

I just got reprints; the picture is of my 3 cousins, at my cousin's
request. This is the 2nd 8x10 I've ever done. The 50mm + Reala in a
sunny day, holds up to an 8x10 really well. But I have to admit, I'm
use to seeing 8x10's from my friend's Hassey, and so I was not as
impressed as I had hoped..
I have not seen proof, that 35mm is just about there on the edge for
8x10's...
