One of the most important things that a digital camera can do for you is to 
simply provide unclipped data. Clipping is the digital term that corresponds to 
overexposure/underexposure. If you have an unclipped image, then you can 
post-process it with any profile you like. In fact, for photographers who 
digitally process scanned film images, most color filters (that fit to the 
lens) are obsolete.

Take any "raw" picture from your digital camera, open it in Photoshop and look 
at the histogram. If the values are jammed to the left or to the right (or 
both) then unfortunately you have clipped data. The highlights and/or shadows 
can never be fully presented using any profile.

The photographer has some control over clipping by setting the camera's 
exposure parameters.

This concept applies both to digital and (scanned) film media.
