Sure, the speed of hard drive in such devices is slower than the
transfer rate achievable by Firewire or USB 2, but at least you have a
small sized mass storage on you wherever you go. (And it plays MP3 --
ugh).

My understanding of iPod is that it needs a computer to download files.
But there are completely independent hard drive devices out there that
will take a cable, read your memory chip, display the pictures, allow
you to edit them, connect to a TV, etc for about the price of an iPod.
