>Does anyone have experience with this head?
I love it! I love it so much that I've converted my other heads to use the 3270
QR plate that the 3257 uses.
Cons: big, heavy, slow -- not for backpacking, not for action shots. Not for
panorama stitching, as the yaw axis is significantly offset from the tripod
screw, which is traditionally below the nodal point.
Pros: precise positioning, zero backlash, like you sometimes get when
tightening a 3-axis head. I use it for copy work, macro, telephoto 300mm and up
-- anything that requires very precise positioning. The QR plates are sturdy (I
use them on a Linhof 4x5), stable, and relatively cheap.
>Any advice on the tripod?
I have my 410/3257 on a Benbo #1. I wouldn't feel as safe on anything lighter.
I have a Gitzo carbon fiber (what an expensive piece of junk) that feels
scarily top-heavy with the 410 and anything bigger than a 180/2.8.
>I will use it with my OM's, primarily with the 135/4.5 and 90/2 macro lenses.
Perfect! With the Benbo, I find I can ALMOST get away without a rail or slider.
You'll want an extra QR plate for the bellows. I get them locally for about $12.
The 3270 QR plate at first seems unwieldy on the svelte OM body, but unlike
smaller plates, the OM will actually be stable and balanced on the fat 3270
plate.
I'm even machining my own QR plates for it. I cut 1/2" aluminum on a table saw.
These "mini plates" work great on the E-20, which would tip when mounted on the
stock 3270 plate. I put photos on dpreview.com, but their search engine is down
right now, so I can't post the link.
