Ok, John, what do you mean by portfolio:
I have used everything from a slide tray with two dozen slides (after
checking to ensure they could project them) to a rather large and heavy box
of fifteen acid-free mounted, matted, and _framed_ (under UV glass),
ready-to-hang 11x14 and 11x16 prints (print size, not frame size).
For those still wondering what a "traditional" portfolio of mounted and
matted prints looks like, Light Impressions makes and sells portfolio
storage and carrying cases (among numerous other products for archival
storage and framing). Take a look at their portfolio products here:

For what I was suggesting, you're correct that a stack of 4x6's or 5x7's
could work. I do feel a dozen or so carefully selected 8x10's, unmounted
in a decent plain white print envelope, would be much better than a shoebox
of 4x6's though.
