Yep . . . you guessed it. It's for DoF.
At the magnification levels you can achieve with one, if the subject has
any depth dimension (i.e., not flat copy work) you had best be able to
seriously stop the lens down and pour in lots-a-light (and be willing to
give up some resolution on the diffraction end of things if necessary).
