Although an agent for the largest good neighbor insurance company in the
country, I don't really get involved in settling claims. Last night I got a
call at home from one of my long term great clients that had a lightning
strike at their home. A claim had already been set up by our 24/7 claims
service, however I held their hand a little and assured them all would be all
right. When I went by to check on them this morning, it was probably the
worst non-fire lightning strike I had seen. While they were watch TV
lightning hit their swimming pool heater, entered the house through the water
lines, electrical line and gas lines, which basically fried almost all of
their electronics and appliances, broke both a water line between the first
and second floor and the gas line at the clothes dryer. They are pretty much
without utilities for a few days. So while I was there doing what it is I do
for my living, I decided to go get a camera and take a few pictures of all
the fried wire, blown up parts of the water heaters and pipes, melted
insulation on electrical wires, and the place where the lightning came out in
there driveway breaking the concrete. My special OM insurance rig this day
was an OM 2S, 40mm f2 (the fastest thing I had with me) and a T-32 flash.
Not as interesting as why I generally like to use my gear for, but
interesting nonetheless. Guess that is one reason I usually have a kit with
me. Bill Barber
