Stands for Exposure Value. It's a system of light measurement designed
for photographic exposure measurement. The EV goes up by one for each
doubling of light, i.e. for each stop increase, film speed doubling or
shutter speed halving. Many early rangefinder cameras with in-lens
shutters had a lock that linked the EV to shutter speed and aperture so
that one ring could be turned to maintain exposure while changing
aperture and shutter speed complimentarily. For the purposes of the post
you are asking about, 1 EV equals 1 stop.
