The germans were, IMO, incapable of thinking outside the box and design
something as svelt as the OM-1. Their 1960's and early 70's SLR's had to have
lots of solidity and metal. To this day they still haven't done anything like
the OM series, and probably never will. The ligher R-series cameras (R3-7)
were re-built/hollowed-out Minolta XD-11's.
That said, the Leicaflex's are very nice cameras, you just need strength to use
one, more so with the Zeiss Contarex that was it's contemporary.
IMO, the OM-1 is NOT up to the standards or solidity of an M2 or M3. If you
haven't put the two side-by-side, you definitely don't notice the difference
that the OM-1's ligher construction makes. Yes, the OM1's very nice, but it's
no M3. Evaluated separately, you can be fooled into thinking that they are
similar in perceived build-quality and feel, IME.
