I've heard tell of a wide angle adapter for this flash but not of a
neutral density adapter. Is there such a beast? I was thinking
(dangerous!!) that this might help keep the flash from overpowering the
natural light in close up fill situations. A OEM unit would give a known
light reduction factor. If I ad lib then fine tuning will be harder. Is
this a harebrained scheme or is it workable?

In the spirit of encouraging on topic discussion:
I don't think you could possible overpower anything with the F280.
Seriously, using in the F mode puts out a very small amount of light.
I believe it does have a minimum distance limitation for very close
up. You might want to get one of the F synch cords for operating it
off the flash shoe to keep it in its operating range.
