The problem with certain rare lenses is a paucity of market data -- they have
big variation bars. If only a few are sold, they tend to be sold at widely
varying prices, whereas with the 50/1.8 (for example), the shape of the normal
curve is quite steep and the outliers are few.
With rare items like the 20/2 and 38/2.8, people who have "the jones" pay
whatever price to get one. Don't expect a bargain for those on eBay -- cruise
KEH, Cameta, Woodmere, and other camera shops who have their own listings.
If you have a little extra cash, you can sometimes pick up combos and sell the
bits you don't want to end up with a bargain. (Shades of Tom Scales... :-) I
paid $1000 for a 38/2.8, 20/2, 135/4.5, 80/4 and bellows with double release in
10- condition a few years ago. Not quit a Fang, but I was happy. Problem is, I
didn't want to part with ANY of it! I bought them from Woodmere Cameras. They
were priced as a package.
