Actually, I believe that the "name" is important on a lens.

Heresy?

Not really. It comes down to consistancy. There are several
reasons why I shoot with the older silvernosed lenses. Non the
least is appearance!!! My lenses all have a consistant color
cast and bokeh.

Back in the dark ages (13 years ago) I was part-timing in a
camera shop. We carried all of the major brands and a nice
selection of Brand-X lenses. I did a head-to-head comparison of
the lenses, enlisting the help of the other guys during slow
days, to get a good solid feel for the differences.

It was amazing! What we found, with extremely rare exception,
was that the Zuikos were easier to focus (more snap), had a
distinct color cast most definitely different than other brands
and had a unique bokeh. We did like the Minolta lenses too, for
what it's worth.

What this excercise proved was that although exceptions existed,
the Brand-X lenses did not provide consistant image qualities
with the Zuikos. This is critical if you are shooting the same
subject with different lenses. The differences were extreme
enough that it was equal to the differences between Fuji and
Kodak films.

I very much like the look, feel, and characteristics of my
lenses. There are only two lenses in my bag that give any form
of different look: 50/3.5 and 135/3.5. And that's just in the
area of Bokeh.

Is the Zuiko 90/2 a primo-deluxe performer? You bet! That lens
truely goes beyond "specs". Many lenses are better in
specifications, but that lens possesses something that is not
measurable. Clinical vs character. Tokina, Tamron and Vivitar
all have similar lenses, but none of them match the Zuikos

Besides, I just happen to like the way my Zuikos feel. They fit
the hands better, are lighter, smaller and the rings turn the
same direction...
