>From what I have heard previously on this list the 40/2 was not an
expensive lens when first released (somewhere between the 50/1.8 and the
50/1.4), it has only become a bit of a "cult" lens recently and
consequently the price has gone through the roof. Let's face it the
performance of the 40/2 does not justify it's high price.
