I own both, and use professionally mostly 6x6. Here's my attempt at muddying
the water:
on MF systems: there are two requirements that I consider non-negotiable.
Interchangable backs. the ease of use is incredible, not at all like owning
two bodies (although a backup isn't a bad idea, if you can't rent one in a
pinch). Leaf shutters. The difference in using flash easily offsets the cost
differental. And really, how often do you need a shutter speed higher than
1/500th? In most cases, the higher speeds (with their attendant innaccuracy)
just bail you out when you load ASA800 and go out in the sun.
on 35mm: unless you plan to shoot exclusively weddings and portraits, keep a
single digit body (I would keep the 4, or maybe the 1). There will be a
client that needs slides, as digital presentations are still not the norm
for most people. That means copy work, so keep the 50/3.5. Keep also a wa
and tele for your own snapshots.
on the darkroom: stick with b&w, unless you want another hobby. It's
impossible to compete financially with a high volume wedding and portrait
lab. Just the costs of test prints will be more that a good finished one
from a specialist, with the advantage of volume.
