Well, after I came out of my Nikon coma, I was ecstatic to find that the
focus turned the "right" way, the lenses mounted easier, and generally that
I enjoyed using the camera more! Although the DoF preview was better
designed, I would have preferred it on the left hand side. However, I have
gotten used to operating it with my middle finger when necessary. I guess
this also depends on how one holds the camera. I cradle the lens in my left
hand instead of holding it top and bottom.
As mentioned previously, I'd like to have opposite directions on the SS and
aperture dials so that they would correspond to the direction of the needle
in the VF. I was quite pleased to find that the M6 TTL (and probably M7)
operate in this manner. The meter indicates two arrows and a dot in the
center (I think), and one turns either the aperture or SS dial in that
direction to balance the exposure. Even though the two dials are 90 degrees
to each other, I imagine that it would work quite well.
I guess this only applies to manual mode. Maybe they realized this when
they made the OM-4. the VF shows the faster SS on the left hand side. This
seems more natural, and I forget the dis-connect when adjusting the SS. I
know this is a small quirk, but it still catches me off-guard every now and
again. I only thought of this recently as I am now in "winter mode" using
mostly my OM-1. for me the direction of the aperture is "correct" as it
follows the direction of the needle, but the SS is "backwards".
I guess some mysteries are not meant to be solved...
