I can't imagine a beginning photography instructor starting off on such a
tangent. The point wouldn't even register with most of the class.
Besides, there's good reason to start with a basic SLR, not the least of
which is understanding how light is projected on a focal plane. That
connection to the earliest cameras and even the camera obscura is a good
way, it seems, to explain basic image-making.
The arguments about "air" images vs. screens, the Leica "glow", which lens
is best for Tri-X, etc., etc, is the hell to which you descend long after
the first joy of photo class has faded. Hopefully Rob's instructor will
get back on-topic.
