Hi, I'm another one of those lurkers on the list, basically since I
have little knowledge and am gaining it through lurking (for about a
month or two, since I found the list.) I can tell you, I´ve learned a
lot about everything, (including a tiny bit about OM equipment) great
list, guys.
About that trip to Singapore (original subject matter) I would take
zip-lock bags and silica gel, as has been previously discussed here. I
guess keeping used film in the hotel room (dry& cool) would also help.
About Provia (& other slide films for that matter) what about buying
it on ebay? It seems to me that it comes pretty cheap, both expired
and fresh. Also, about expired slide film, anybody have any thoughts
on that? The only experience I have is a roll of Kodachrome 64,
expired by about 3 - 6 months, it seems to have worked perfectly, the
exposures seem right and so does the color balance, and grain. Then
again, I've never used Kodachrome besides that one time.....

A few thoughts on this.
Expiration dates probably have a margin built in that a couple of
months don't matter if you use it right away. If it has been
refrigerated, expired for a year or two does not seem to matter. But
that is for film that I bought fresh and stored myself. What is the
history of the film you are going to buy? Has it been through a dozen
airport scanners and the owner is afraid to use it. Has it gotten hot,
displayed in a shop window or worse, one of those awful little outside
stands near a tourist spot? The last time I saw an estimate of film
degradation by Kodak, years ago, it was only a matter of hours for
visible degradation at ambient summer temperatures that are normal on
the west coast, not to mention even higher ambient temperatures
farther inland. The damage to your pictures may not be obvious, but
they just may not look very good and you will blame yourself or camera.
Are you going to redo your trip because your pix do not look quite? Not
likely.
The cost of film compared to the cost of a trip is minor. Film is where
the image is made. Don't put used tires on your Porsche. You don't know
where they have been or what damage they have sustained.
