Sorry Mike, my misuse of the word "strange" might have disguised my
meaning. Samwise Gamgee's accent was inconsistent and not in keeping
with the spirit of the film/book.

I must confess that I did not pay attention to that Orc's accent, but
I think that you are right. In fact most of the baddies had East
London or Cockney accents, perhaps as an easy signpost to their evil
intent. Yes, I do hope that no Londoners are listening... and if
they are, that they take my comment as one of artistic or aesthetic
perspective, not as practical condemnation of all Londoners (even
East Londoners ;-)) as evil or criminal. In fact some of my best
friends are from Bow and Mile End. I once went out with a nurse from
the Middlesex Hospital...

... further proof of my good intent available on request.

The only strange accent was Samwise Gamgee's.

Chris, I was referring to the accent of one of the Orks who had captured
Merry and Pippin. To me it registered as a UK derived accent. I thought
that if Jackson had a sense of humour he might use an Aussie for the
part. My wife thinks it was a Cockney accent. I have no idea. In any
event the film was a polyglot of language in keeping with the spirit of
the book.
