Thanks to both of you for asking the question and for the answer. I have the
same phenomenon on my OM-1MD. It's an unusual thing to see the meter drop
the closer you get to the eyepiece but it obviously reads light reflecting
off my face through the viewfinder.
I asked my local "expert". "No clue-never heard of such a thing"...a very
prestigious Seattle store too.

Yes, it is normal for OM1,2,2n, especially if you have a slow lens in front,
eyecup can help if you don't wear glasses.
