In my wife's aunt's apartment there is another picture of the Iwo Jima
flag which was apparently taken some time after the battle was over. It
shows her husband, John H. Craven, the Marine chaplain posing with a
group of other officers at the base of the flag. He was involved in
many WWII and Korean campaigns and ultimately went on to become the
Chaplain of the Marine Corps.
He was a very interesting guy to talk to but I never thought to ask him
about the Iwo Jima shot. You can read about him at the Arlington
Cemetary web site below. He's also featured in one of Tom Brokaw's books.
