Cooking fumes, tobacco smoke and all manner of other such oil vapors will
condense on any cool surface just like water. I keep all optical items be
they camera, binocular etc always cased when stored - preferrably in an
airtight type - or at least under a closed layer of cloth, and take special
pains in this regard. To me a lens UV filteris also a good idea for this
reason alone; a filter is easily (compared to a lens) cleaned, and can be
tossed and replaced if necessary. For cleaning such deposits on a filter
some fluid with grease solvent properties is better than any detergent or
soap which often leave a residue of their own.
Cheers,
Lee
