Brian Swale related his dirty filter story <g>,
"It was soon obvious that there was a thick layer of accumulated grease of
years on that glass...." Maybe it wasn't just total neglect.
Us old timers used to make our own 'soft-focus' lenses for portraits by
smearing Vasoline ointment on the filter. Worked great, and you could alter the
effect during shooting to soften only trouble areas (like big butts?)
But, it does help to clean it off occasionally!
