Hi folks,
Just thinking about the Customs duties reported by Chris, John and Roger;
before New Zealand so enthusiastically adopted a free-trade mentality, here
we also had similar punitive duties.
But, in the case of people taking dutiable items such as cameras out of the
country for a vacation, or sending the stuff overseas for repair / maintenance,
it was possible to obtain a certificate from Customs which recorded that the
item had been sent out of the country temporarily. Then, when it returned
and Customs assessed it for duty, it was sufficient to show the export
certificate, to have the import duties waived.
Maybe such a mechanism exists in the EU now?
