I see ND filters having two applications. One would be when varying light
balance between two or more flashes. The other would be when doing closeup
work. The output of electronic flashes is controlled by varying the length of
time the flash is "on". Typically this duration varies from about 1/1000 sec
on the long end to about 1/50,000 sec on the short end. If 1/50,000 is still
too long, an ND filter is in order.
