A common misconception of the 4/3 standard is that it means size. It does
not. There is a sensor size specification in the standard, and I recall
reading somewhere it was stated (by Olympus) to be "around the size of an
APS frame" or something to that effect (similar wording to Pentax's press
release). 4/3 is the aspect ratio. The linked dpreview.com sensor size
comparison did not address the Olympus 4/3 standard.

A ratio is not usually indicated by a dimension. Apparently Olympus thinks it is size on their web site announcement:

4/3-Inch (Type) Image Sensor Size
The Four Thirds System uses a 4/3-type CCD, CMOS or other image sensor, and will facilitate the development of dedicated digital camera lens systems that maximize image sensor performance and ensure outstanding image quality while also being smaller and easier to handle than 35mm film SLR camera lens systems

A further indication is the recent development of a 4/3" chip by Kodak.
