You didn't have the batteries in backwards, did you? Reverse
polarity on a capacitor will cause it to blow.
Hmm. A blown capacitor would be the result of a broken circuit
board or internal ground which would cause the capacitor to have
negative current applied to a positive connection.
Just thinking back to the olden days when I worked in an
electronics repair shop.
