Really great shots. Yep on a Mac they look great. But
I'd prefer to see them for real. Questions. The shot
of Steve Riley was done with the T32 right? Was that
handheld? Did you use a flash extender on the T32? The
T32 was on camera in the shoe or on a bounce grip?
Hummm.. about how far were you from Steve?

I only shoot handheld, as it is almost impossible to stay in one spot for
this kind of stuff. You have to move for good positioning, sometimes
competing with other photogs for the "sweet spot".
It was night time but not completely dark for the Steve Riley and Delbert
McClinton sets, because of the stage lights. This presented a problem for me
since the flash restricted me to no faster shutter speed than 1/60 and the
distance (about 35 ft) restricted me to about f 5.6 (T-32 on manual, full
power). At that shutter speed and aperture there was plenty of ambient
exposure to cause blur from subject movement, and several frames did show
this. I recognized this situation (having done this often) and restricted my
shots to when subjects were fairly still (it's also a bitch to keep em in
focus when they are jumping around), but the results are a nice blend of
stage lighting and fill flash. I'd say the "keeper" ratio was about 60%. I
have some neat ones with a perfect halo of rim lighting thanks to the stage
lights.
The T-32 I use on an el cheapo flash bracket which allows me to quickly
pivot the bracket 90 degrees so the flash is on top for a vertical shot. It
sits about 10 inches above the lens. I love this bracket so much that I have
a BG-2 that I have NEVER used.
Hardware for this stuff is fairly simple, you just gotta keep the ambient
lighting in mind. If often will be too bright to use auto or TTL, so you
have to do it manually at times, which gets difficult for me the longer I
have been partying at the festival..<BG>. I have shot some festivals where
nothing is in focus after about 6pm. I have since learned to pace myself.
