On the 2S/3/4, the self timer raises the mirror and closes the aperture before
the countdown. This means that the only mechanical motion at the time of taking
the picture is the shutter blinds. Since all mechanical motion causes vibration
in the camera / lens structure, allowing 12 seconds for some of it to decay
before takig the shot reduces the impact of vibration on the image.
