I'm trying to take an unofficial survey, of; if you have 1 lens and 1 lens only on your "travel" camera, what focal length would that be?

I like the Hasselblad 903 a lot. I think it's one of the ultimate travel cameras... I like the Fuji Rangefinder series also. But I think the GW690III is a great lens, on a not go great body. I'm wondering though, if a fixed lens medium-format is a better travel package then a 35mm with a bunch of lenses. Granted 35mm is in abundance in most everywhere in the world, but I love big filmplane..

On vacation, my 28mm sees most of the action, followed by my 50mm. My 90mm comes out for flower, and portrait shots only...

John's Ultimate Travel Cameras:

(a) OM-4 or OM-2S with 50/1.2 or 50/1.4 prime; if zoom is allowed, then 35-105/3.5~4.5 (which I use as an outdoor "walkaround" when space/weight dictate only one body/lens).

(b) Contax IIIa CD with 50/1.5 Sonnar. Substitute any decent RF with 40mm to 50mm prime mounted on it for the one I've listed. These include (but are not limited to) some of the older Olympus RF's, the Canon QL-III, Leica M, and Contax G1/G2.

(c) Rollei 35S with 40/2.8 Sonnar for compact size. Also decent are the XA (although it's a wider angle lens than I care for), Minox, Contax T, etc. Preferred are those with 40mm - 50mm lenses, internal metering, and allow manual focus and exposure control (can be frustrating in use if you're accustomed to manual control).

(d) A sturdy, reliable TLR for medium format. Other than the beastly Mamiya C220/330 TLR's, most are smaller and lighter than the MF SLR's. Lens is 75mm or 80mm.

As you might guess, I'm inclined toward "standard" focal lengths for this. Quite a bit can be done using a "standard" and they're typically faster than other lengths.
