I have mentioned my preference for Pelican cases. Tough, air/watertight. I
have several; different sizes for different purposes. I put in a 3 cubic
foot capacity silica gel cannister in each case. The insides are always so
dry the tiny foam bits stick to everything. The protection these cases offer
is worth the cost and weight to me. For vehicle transport, general travel
etc the protection all round is excellent. A softbag can still be taken
along as well - or of course be used exclusively for running around light on
foot. A light travel camera kit of one OM + short zoom (or one wide + one
standard lens) and one compact RF/VF (or p&s) backup will fit in my smallest
Pelican case. A few rolls of film and perhaps a filter or two might just go
in too.
The others I like are "coolers" - the hard/insulated Coleman, Igloo type
etc. Large for vehicle transport (small Pelicans will go inside with other
stuff). They insulate against heat, provide cover from prying eyes - and the
prospect of a few beers and sandwiches does not invite a vehicle break-in
(Uh.. usually). Smaller ones will work too holding a softpack beltpouch kit
or pack. Soft shoulder/handcarry coolers offer an alternative to the soft
hand/shoulder carry camera bag. Insulation and covert camera kit carry (ie:
drink + sandwiches and not worth stealing).
In softbags and softcoolers I would include large heavy-duty ziplock bags
and silica gel cans. Moisture/humidity is perhaps THE enemy of most all
things precise and finely made. Heat and humidity together are going to
probably take more of a toll on such items than most normal use over a very
long time. One of the things I do is try to keep things dry - and out of the
heat - as far as reasonably possible. It has paid off too; from many items I
have had literally decades of service. Not just camera gear, but in a number
of catagories.
Cheers,
Lee

"Fellow travelers,
There seems to be a healthy, ongoing discussion (over many threads) about
traveling and gear - what to bring, what film to shoot, and recently even
what clothes to wear (hey, if it works go with silk underwear!). However,
never much talk about the cases, bags and other items used to transport the
gear. What's the experience with this? Do most people just take a soft-bag
as a carryon, use a hard case (e.g., Pelican) and pack their soft bag, or
what? I've generally just taken either my small bag or knapsack style, but
neither would not hold enough gear for a dedicated photo trip.
Inquiring minds want to know."
G'day Henry,
When my wife and I spent last October in the US (we live in Sydney, Oz) I
had not long had my OM-2 with only a few accessories etc. Before leaving
home I bought a Lowepro 'Orion' bag and found it ideal for the sort of
travelling/shooting we were doing. It held the OM-2 with 100-200/f5 zoom,
50/f1.8, T20 flash, 10 films, MJU-2 (Epic), Mayima ZE-X 35mm with 50mm and
28mm lenses, Manfrotto monopod underneath and the usual odds and ends. The
bag has a waist strap a la bumbag and a shoulder strap as well and is
substantially padded where it fits the body. A nice touch is that the lid is
hinged on the outside so that one can swivel the Orion from backside to the
front and and easily see/get at the contents without undoing either strap.
Before we left the US I'd added a 28/f2.8.
Hope this helps.
John.
