I also wanted a setup like the T-28, but I had very
little extra cash and only a T-20 with a broken foot
(goes in the shoe, right?). So I got a second T-20
cheap (thanks to Tom Scales), a generic flash
extension cord, and a Duo-Sync cord off of *bay.
I soldered one end of the generic flash extension cord
to the connections directly in the broken T-20. The
other end I modified to match up to the proper
contacts on the Shoe 4.
The Duo-Sync goes to the other flash, making that one
removable and unmodified. A lot cheaper then the T-20
autoconnector and "proper" cords!
It is a bit heavy, but definitely useable. I use NiMH
batteries and the recycle time is near instant. I did
some rough calculations, and the T-20s are working at
their extreme shortest auto abilities, the milk
container diffusers help reduce the output a bit. The
homemade bracket allows pretty much infinite
adjustability with lighting ratios and directions.
1:1 looks a bit strange and unnatural, but 1:2 or more
looks much better. The auto exposure works well, I
get a flash confirmation light and the slides confirm
that the TTL is working properly, even with this
cobbled setup!

The picture shoes the 135 f/3.5 and reversed 50 f/1.8
that I use instead of a lusted after 80mm f/4.
Definitely a poor-man's macro setup!
By the way, fantastic macro shot, Walt. I too missed
it the first time through that TOPE section.
Absolutely incredible! Excellent colors and action!
