Online info -- there's lots around, but http://www.photo.net/learn/ is
probably as good a starting point as any.
As for the specifics of what the various speed/aperture settings will do,
one way to save yourself some film is to play around with
http://www.88.com/exposure/simcam.htm and see what the various settings give
you. (and, heck, even if you know what to expect, this is a cool online way
to fiddle).
