Polarizer, most often. Also some times half-nd-half-clear, to those cases
where a bright sky would otherwise exceed the films capabilities. If I
want to cheat and pretend that I am having a nice sunny sky, I have a
"half-tobacco" and an "half-purple" (they are really graduated, but you
know what I mean).
Also, the inevitable FL-W to compensate for all the flurocent light that
is put up in waaay too many places.
For b&w, I have an arsenal of contrast enhancing filters: deep red, green,
blue etc.
Those are what I use the most. I guess everyone has a box of "yeah, they
were fun, but highly useless" effect filters...I know I do.

Good place to start...hmm. I have a booklet from Hoya where they showcase
their filters. Get a copy of that, then get a few of the filters you think
look most fun...then...lots of film :)
