After coming so strong about how great plastic is, I have two brief stories
about how bad it can be.
The tuner/remote-control for my Sony Discman has a spring-loaded pocket clip.
The clip broke the other day at the point of greatest stress. One of the shaft
mounting holes on the body of the control also cracked. Clearly a bad choice of
plastic.
Sunday I shot portraits of a friend, using his Canon AE-1. One of the lenses
was a plastic-barreled Canon zoom lens. Yuck! It's products like this that give
plastic a bad name. If there were any proof the Japanese lack aesthetic sense
(at least when it comes to consumer products), this is it.
