I have done many times. But I would have to agree that brackets definately
help if the conditions are more than a couple of stops off 16.
But use the same film often enough, with the same camera, and you can get
very close to what a meter will tell you in about any daylight conditions.
Dusk/dawn etc are another matter; but even then some practice and brackets
will usually nail it for you.

Depends on what meter, the XA's meter is good enough for slides (also
the XA-4), I don't think I can guess an exposure for slide unless
under the sunny 16 condition.
