I use a Canon G2, which I really like. Real macro is accomplished with
old-fashioned close-up lenses.
The Nikon CoolPix 990 and 995 both had very nice macro modes. And the 990
is available used at reasonable prices.

Subject: [OM] [OT] Digital Camera Recommendations
Hi all,
I need some quick suggestions. I need to buy a new Digital Camera for my
workplace. Cost IS a factor. Although I myself am Olympus-biased, I ask
that you consider all available makes & consider cost as well.
Most important features:
1) a viewscreen that ACURATELY represents the picture that was taken, not
one that is somehow brightened or altered for ease of viewing.
2) compact flash/IBM microdrive compatibility
3) MACRO MACRO MACRO!!!! Will be used extensively to photograph small
labels
for archival purposes. Resolution will have to make this possible as well.
(3 inch square labels that pretty much fill the screen)
4) Built-in idiot-proof flash for the non-photog variety of employee.
5) Minimum 3 megapixel.
Thanks for all quick replies.
