This is an excellent discussion & I really like Joel's & John Lind's posts.
I think that to be a good photographer (or good anything) it's good to ask
yourself "Why?" answer it, and follow the implications and let your
thoughts adjust your technique.
But I also think you have to not only look at the externals (message,
viewers, ...) but also your own internal feelings. Why does it appeal to
you? What heartstrings is it pulling? Sometimes the answer is impossible to
put into words or thoughts, but it helps to look for it.
