Intent.
I was talking to a friend today about this, and came to a rough conclusion.
What is the intent of the particular photograph? Is it "art" - or is it a
"photographic record"? I think it is largely a matter of what the intent of
a particular shot is. Of course a lousy "for record" shot might be salvaged
and used to create a "creative" image, so this is not some kind of absolute.
Of course if "manipulation" is taken to an absurd context - even the "choice
of film" (say "Kodak as opposed to Fuji" because of it's color rendering
properties) could be seen as "manipulation" - or using an 85mm lens for
portraits as opposed to a 50mm lens.
Cheers,
Lee
