There's a lot of wisdom here... I'm hearing Donald saying about computers
what we all already understand about our OM's. We don't need the latest
wunderbricks, our current machine does what we want and need it to do...
I have (literally) bought into this for cameras, but still have the computer
upgrade bug. Its interesting that my Dad is a 'slow adopter' for technology.
He says "I'm retired, I have time... what do I need a faster computer for?"
and I have a hard time answering.
My duty each Christmas is to drag him somewhat forward on the march of
technological progress... after I gifted him with a CD writer he discovered
that there were some uses he could find for it... a larger monitor and more
RAM were first accepted, then taken for granted, but I am sure he won't
easily give either up.
Next Christmas I think it will be an LCD monitor, although "I've got plenty
of room on my desk, why do I need a small flat monitor?" is the current
stand. Once he has it he'll appreciate it... <g>
The computer companies are finding that consumers are realizing that for
most of what they do faster computers are not necessary, many speculate that
is one reason sales are slowing... what is the difference each day between a
1.4ghz and a 2.2ghz computer when used for checking email on AOL? Little
enough that sales have slowed down...
