Dunno about your dad, John, but 50 years ago I was using both Wesson and
Gossen meters for exposure 'estimation', and composing on a 6X6 Rolleiflex TLR
screen or a 4X5 Graphic, and snap shooting with a Leica IIIF... those weren't
exactly the stone ages.
