Hi Ralph,
I can remember back to when I was 5. People tend to think 5-year-olds don't
know much, and have little idea of what makes things tick. But it just ain't
so. 5-year olds have a good sense of injustice and also appreciate being
involved too. Given the right attention, who knows what might develop.

My 2 cents' worth is; get him what you can afford in the way of (say, an
OMG, and a 50mm lens) that require proper setting of controls and are not
as fiddly as an XA.; and don't cost the earth. Stress that this is a proper
valuable camera ( but don't overdo that, after all, it looks like Dad's camera
so it must be important) and explain the controls, and what not to do such
as touch the lens (fit a UV filter & a lens hood), and leave him to it with
minimal oversight or attention as required. And when you can, include him
in on your shoots. Then you'll hopefully have a buddy as well as a son. In my
limited experience, it's not too frequent that a son wants to copy Dad, so
build on it.
Best of luck, Brian
