I get a noticeably faster recharge cycle with NiMH compared to alkalines,
particularly during the last half of life when an alkaline's internal
resistance begins to rise (voltage starts to drop off). NiMH (and NiCad)
hold voltage very well until the very end. Current NiMH "AA" cells have a
much greater capacity (in mAH) than NiCad cells do.
I've been using 1600mAH NiMH cells in two T-32's without any problems. The
clue to C.H.Ling's "fried" T-32 was in his last sentence: "54 consecutive
charge and discharge cycle (no wait time in between)." Nearly all shoe
mounted and most handle mounted flash heads have a duty cycle. They cannot
be continuously fired like this without eventually overheating and the
circuitry gives up the ghost.
All this stuff runs on pressurized smoke. As it heats up, the pressure
from it increases. If the pressure from gets too high, it springs a
leak. If enough smoke leaks out, it stops working.
