So do stop down mechanisms. Old preset lenses for SLRs are smaller and
lighter than their 'auto' counterparts. Lens mount to film distance
makes a difference too. The Topcon had a 55mm register distance where
the OMs have 46mm. A Topcor 53/2 is significantly shorter and a little
lighter than a Zuiko 50/1.8. Of course the Topcon was a bigger, heavier
camera.
Oh, by the way, UV TOPCOR 1:2 f=53mm, free to a good (or bad) home,
adopter pays shipping.

Seriously, though. Autofocus lenses and internal focusing all make
for larger lens barrels. All that mechanism has to be put somewhere.
If you look at Leica rangefinder lenses you will find that they are
also compact.
